UK Nicotine Pouch Sales Jump 80% as Consumers Turn Away From Traditional Tobacco

Nicotine pouches are growing faster than almost any other consumer product category in the UK, with year-on-year sales up as much as 80% and online searches averaging 50,000 per month — a 42% increase in search volume over the past year alone. New research from Scandinavia suggests this momentum is not a short-term trend but a fundamental transformation in how consumers choose to use nicotine.

Scandinavia as a window into the UK’s future

A major study by Haypp Group, analysing more than 19 million online pouch purchases made across Scandinavian markets between 2018 and 2025, found that tobacco-free nicotine pouches have now overtaken traditional snus in consumer preference. Given that Scandinavia has long been regarded as a public health bellwether — with some of the world’s lowest smoking rates and highest rates of oral nicotine use — the findings carry significant implications for where the UK market is heading.

“Our consumers tell us that they choose pouches because they see them as lower-risk alternatives to products like snus or cigarettes,” said Dr Marina Murphy, senior director of scientific affairs at Haypp Group and co-author of the research. The study’s findings are raising new questions for UK policymakers as uptake accelerates and the pouch category moves from a niche product into mainstream convenience retail.

A global market on the move

The global nicotine pouch market was valued at $10.1 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $59.5 billion by 2032 — a compound annual growth rate that outpaces virtually every other consumer nicotine category. The UK’s 80% annual growth figure suggests British consumers are tracking well ahead of that global average, driven by a combination of increased brand availability, growing awareness, and post-disposable-vape-ban consumers looking for convenient, discreet nicotine alternatives.

What this means for UK retailers

For convenience retailers, the numbers point to a clear opportunity. Pouch margins are significantly higher than traditional combustible tobacco, and the category requires minimal shelf space relative to its revenue contribution. Retailers who have placed nicotine pouches near checkouts or alongside energy drinks and coffee have reported strong cross-category lift.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, expected to come into force in 2026, will introduce a minimum purchase age of 18 for nicotine pouches — aligning the category more closely with existing tobacco regulation. Industry observers expect this to strengthen consumer confidence in the category rather than suppress it, by signalling a level of regulatory legitimacy that positions pouches as credible, adult-oriented alternatives to smoking.

With Scandinavian data showing pouches can anchor long-term reductions in smoking prevalence, the UK’s 80% sales surge may be just the opening chapter of a much larger structural shift in the country’s nicotine landscape.
